A Pet-Friendly Guide to Moving
So you found your dream house and it's time to get moving! We always think about moving the obvious things — furniture, clothes, kitchen supplies, etc. — but what about your pets? Here are some animal moving tips to help take some of the stress off of you and your furry friends.
- When moving, you will want to transport your pet in a pet carrier to keep both you and your fur baby safe. If your pet isn't used to being in a carrier, introduce it into their regular routine so that when the move comes, the transition will not be as difficult. Taking them in their carrier on short car rides and give them treats and praise to make it a positive experience.
- Is your pet healthy enough for travel? Let your veterinarian do a quick check-up. If they have to be shipped by air, high altitudes can have just as much impact on animals as it does on us.
- While you're at the vet getting your pet a check-up, go ahead and get a copy of their latest health and vaccination reports. Having your pet's paperwork is especially important if you're traveling overseas or across state lines.
- If your move will take a couple of days and you have to stay somewhere overnight, make sure to do your research ahead of time to find pet friendly accommodations. Many places charge pet fees, so be prepared to pay extra for your additional occupants.
- When you first arrive at your new home, check the perimeter of the property for holes in the fencing before letting your pet loose in the backyard. Before letting your pet inside, check the house for any open windows or doors and make sure there aren't any hazardous materials laying around.
- After your pet is safely inside, find a small room to keep them in while you move in everything. Make sure to have some things already there that are familiar to them like a blanket or some of their favorite toys.
- Once you have the address to your new home, go ahead and get new tags made with your updated information. If your pet somehow gets out in your new neighborhood, whoever finds them can easily help them find their way back.
