Top 10 Songs to Play When You Pay Your Credit Card Down

September 06, 2017

There are two days of celebration when you have a credit card—the day you get approved for a higher credit limit, and the day you finally pay that card down (because you took full advantage of it). So, we put together a bit of a soundtrack for the latter. So the next time you pay down a credit card, pop the champagne, brag a little on Twitter, and put on these 10 songs.

1. Get Up Offa That Thing – James Brown

Although Brown is talking about his alleged troubles with the IRS, the spirit of this song pretty accurately captures the feeling of paying down your credit card.

“Get up offa that thing/ And dance till you feel better.”

2. Don’t Stop Me Now – Queen

Feeling invincible yet? If not, this song will get you there.

“Don’t stop me now/ I’m having such a good time/ I’m having a ball.”

3. Since You’ve Been Gone – Kelly Clarkson

Perhaps it’s time to release some angst, and if so, bid your balance farewell with Kelly by boldly declaring that you can now “breathe for the first time.”

4. We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together – Taylor Swift

If Kelly doesn’t do it for you, continue to declare your newfound independence with Taylor. You were too good for that massive credit card balance anyways, and you are “never getting back together. Like, ever.”

5. Just Got Paid – Johnny Kemp

It’s time to celebrate. Now, we can’t suggest you go blow your newfound wealth all in one night. But, Johnny Kemp does. And later *NSYNC does, in all their nineties teen, frosted-tips wisdom, covered the 1988 platinum single.

“Now I know you probably thought you had me/ Played (played)/ But the check is in my hand and I just got paid.”

6. Money, Money, Money – ABBA

Don’t forget where you came from. You worked for this moment, and now you get to see what it’s like to be in “a rich man’s world.”

7. Happy – Pharrell Williams

It’s an ear worm, but how else will you let the world know how happy you are without blasting this from your car windows while driving at a very reasonable speed through your neighborhood. After all, a speeding ticket would just put you back where you started.

8. U Can’t Touch This – MC Hammer

Burn the paperwork and delete the phone number. The credit card is down, so now you can buy some new Hammer pants.

“I told you homeboy, you can’t touch this/ Yeah, that’s how we’re livin’ and you know you can’t touch this.”

9. Celebration – Kool & The Gang

It’s a little cliché, but now is the best time to crank this song more than ever.

“There’s a party going on right here/ A celebration to last through the years.”

10. Nine to Five – Dolly Parton

Even though paying down a credit card debt is worth celebrating, there’s only one way to stay ahead of your finances — hard work.

“Workin’ 9 to 5, what a way to make a livin'”
