WHAT TO WATCH FOR
Watch Matt Wyatt, co-host of Head to Head Radio, pick apart the keys to victory for Georgia and Alabama in the upcoming College Football National Championship game.
In this all-SEC matchup, one big thing to keep an eye on is how Alabama overcomes various injury woes on the defensive end. Although their lack of depth in this area hasn’t seemed to scathe their rushing defensive performance yet this season, Georgia’s eighth-ranked rushing offense could be a tall order with the most recent loss of key defensive component, Afernee Jennings.
On the flip side of the equation is Georgia’s rushing defense, which is also phenomenal. Both Alabama and Georgia have allowed only eight rushing touchdowns all season, but given’s Alabama’s slightly less powerful run game, Georgia’s defensive prowess in this area could pay off big time.
An early indicator of Georgia’s success in this national title game will revolve around performance on first downs, which has historically reflected the team’s overall performance in key matchups such as Oklahoma and Auburn. If Alabama’s hulking defense is able to deny them any momentum starting at first down, Georgia will likely trend toward lack of third-down conversions and an overall poor offensive performance.
To see how the big game plays out, make sure to tune in to ESPN January 8 at 8 p.m. Eastern to watch the Georgia Bulldogs take on the Alabama Crimson Tide.
