The Discontinuation of the American Penny

February 19, 2026

What's happening?

The U.S. Treasury has decided to stop making pennies. Consumers and businesses may begin seeing pennies unavailable in some stores and bank locations. We are following the guidance of the Federal Reserve on keeping customers updated.

How Will This Affect Me?

As pennies become unavailable and penny production ends, cash purchases will round to the nearest five cents.  Remember, this only affects cash - not checks, deposits, debit/credit cards, or digital payments.

How Will This Affect Businesses?

You may already begin to see businesses round cash totals to the nearest nickel.  Businesses can work with their software providers for the necessary updates for automation and a smooth transition.

What Should I Expect?

Bank branch locations will continue to give out pennies as long as supply is available. We are also continuing to accept rolled pennies from customers. If you have a question on availability at a particular location, we welcome your call.

Staying Informed

As more updates come from the Treasury and Federal Reserve, we will share new information and help customers and businesses adjust. Our goal is to make this change easy, clear, and smooth for everyone.
